Mission Day 1: She's in the MTC!

Yesterday was a very bitter sweet day for everyone as Tia entered the MTC. She was so excited, talking a mile a minute and shaking everyone's hands! It was very hard to say goodbye, but Tia's attitude made it so much better since she was just so excited to be there. We miss her already, but we know she is where she is supposed to be and where the Lord needs her. So, one day down; let the countdown begin...

Tia's Mission Preparations

We have been busy helping Tia prepare to go on her mission to Utica, New York. She reports to the MTC on Dec. 16th....in just 2 1/2 weeks! We went through the Las Vegas temple on Oct. 31st with her sisters and their husbands.
Last weekend we went back to Alpine and for a farewell in the Alpine 6th ward. It was so wonderful to see all of our friends and family and to feel the love and support for Tia.
Tia did a great job speaking in the meeting on gratitude! Tia, we love you and we're so excited for you!

The Summer flew by for us! It's been hard to find time to blog with so much going on. I'm gonna play catch up for the past couple of months. These events are too important not to mention!

San Francisco: July 31-August 2
We went to San Francisco to see Steph and Mike. Highlights included: clam chowder, riding the cable cars, shopping, Oakland temple visit, and Ash winning the Wicked lottery. Thanks for doing your accounting internship in such a fun city Steph! We will be back!

Back to school: August 24
Matt and Ashley are having a great year so far at Green Valley High School. They go to seminary every morning together and sing in concert choir. Matt made the GVHS men's tennis team and Ashley is returning from last year to play on the girl's team!

Blake Matthew Burnham's Blessing Day: September 6
We all traveled to St. George to see Blake get blessed. He's a handsome little guy and was so well behaved! Em did a great job planning and she and Tia decorated. Chad gave Blake a beautiful blessing. We had a wonderful Labor Day weekend together.

Tia's Mission Call: September 9
After weeks of waiting, Tia got her mission call! She drove it down South where we met her at Emily and Chad's in St. George for the opening. She has been called to serve in the New York Utica mission. She leaves December 16th. Although we will miss her, we are so excited and feel like this is the perfect call for her. She will have an incredible experience. We're so proud of you Sister Zwick!

WELCOME BLAKE MATTHEW BURNHAM

We welcomed Blake Matthew Burnham into the world yesterday, July 2nd at 2:02 p.m. He weighed a whopping 8 lbs. 8oz! It was a wonderful, beautiful, spiritual experience for all of us there....Chad, Em (of course), Tia and me. Matt stayed home with Parker much to Parker's delight. Emily did a fantastic job and had an easy time. She was wonderful and beautiful and so is this little guy. He has tons of dark, curly hair and he's very beautiful, but masculine looking. They are thrilled with him.

Last night Parker met his baby brother. He was more interested in Emily's cool water bottle than anything else in the room. He did give baby Blake a kiss and then pushed him away and said, "All done!" We're assuming he just meant that for the moment :)

Jeff and Ashley are coming today for the weekend. We are having so much fun all being together and sharing in this miracle. Thanks for letting us be a part of it, Chad and Em! We love you so much! Last year we were all in Florida together for my birthday, and I didn't think anything could top that one. But, this one's even better!

Ashley has so many cute LDS friends here in Henderson. On Saturday night a group of them through a dance party here at the house with ROOT beer, and non-alcoholic margaritas. We can't say enough good things about the strong youth out here. They have such high standards and lean on each other at school and parties! I thought her party was a fun idea!

Faith In Every Footstep

The Green Valley Stake and Legacy Ward have been planning for the Trek for almost a year now. Two weeks ago the time came for the big journey. Ashley and Matt rode in a bus with the youth in the ward all the way up to Wyoming trails to walk most of the same path the pioneers walked. Jeff and I participated as parents in the trek in our Alpine ward but with the wedding planning we couldn't be on the committee this time. I missed it SO MUCH after seeing the pictures and hearing the talks in church yesterday by the youth and leaders who were on the Trek. The youth were laughing saying they drove 700 miles to walk 10 miles, but that it was worth it. There were times they walked barefoot, treaded through the Sweet Water river, said goodbye to the men (mormon battalion), fought the bugs with bug spray (getting over 80 mesquito bites), pulled handcarts through mud and rivers, endured the bitter winds in the morning and at night, and got a small glimpse of the sacrifices and hardships the pioneers went through. Each youth picked a pioneer to represent on the trek which helped to make the experience an unforgettable one. The youth in our ward are so funny and the best of friends. We are so blessed to work and associate with the amazing leaders and youth in our ward and also participate in well organized activities like the Trek. Thanks Legacy Ward!Ashley and Bishop Clark

A couple weekends ago we had most of the family here for the weekend. We threw Chad a Happy Graduation party with a yummy steak dinner and cheesecake for dessert. We lounged around the pool, shopped, and just loved being together. We wonder what we did before this pool and putting green! The pool is so refreshing in the heat and a great source of entertainment for the little ones! Bring on the pool parties and barbecues!

Katey will be 3 months old tomorrow and oh how we love this little girl! It is so fun having most of my grandkids just down the street, and Parker only an hour and a half away. I am so lucky I get to see them everyday! Katey can now smile and tries to get your attention by staring at you with her beautiful blue eyes as she coos and coos, it sure does work! Hopefully we'll be getting our 5th grandbaby tomorrow!

Greenspun Jr. High Awards Ceremony

With the end of school year activities (choir concerts, soccer games, finals, parties) and the craziness of Summer, I finally have a moment to blog. The kids finished school two and a half weeks ago and have been enjoying every hot Summer day here in Henderson! It's already 90 degrees this morning!

During the last week of school we attended Matt's 8th grade Graduation/Award Ceremony. The recognition night honored eighth graders who had achieved various types of student awards, and recognized all 8th grade students who completed their studies. One award, the Presidential award, is a national award for educational excellence, good citizenship, 110% effort, and for achieving the Presidential Award of achievement. It is only given to a select few in the grade. Matt was awarded this Presidential Award which means he earned a grade point average of 3.5 or above through his 7th and 8th grade years and scored in the 85th percentile or higher on his standardized math and reading tests! He will receive a copy of a letter from President Barack Obama along with a certificate for his achievements. We are amazed that Matt comes home with straight A's on every report card, and manages to make time for homework (with no reminding) in between his sport practicing and friends. He has only been here for one year and everyone at Greenspun Jr. High knows Matt! Way to go Matt! We love you little smarty pants!

Mother's Day

I apologize for this post being so belated. Along with the celebrations of the wedding and Matt's birthday was Mother's Day. Grandma and Grandpa Zwick made this Mother's Day very special for our whole family. We were all able to spend the weekend together in the Marriot downtown Salt Lake, near the wedding festivities and Lagoon. On Mother's Day we enjoyed one another's company in the hotel with dinner, a heartfelt family home evening, and the baby blessing of my little niece Elise. We loved every bit of the weekend. It was such an enjoyable Mother's Day being with all my kids and grandkids, along with the rest of the Zwick clan!

Last Saturday we went to Lagoon with Jeff's side of the family. Since so many were in town for the wedding we had a family weekend. Like usual, Jeff has to stay until the park closes to make it worth it, and the kids are always perfectly fine with that. The grandkids loved the rides!! They were so happy the entire day! Matt and Jeff did the skycoaster as their last ride! It was such nice weather and a fun day with Grandma and Grandpa and Zwick cousins!

Last weekend was Steph's wedding Friday, Matt's birthday Saturday, and Mother's Day Sunday! The kids were worried Matt's birthday would get overlooked by the busy wedding day so we made sure to get presents ahead of time. Our family would not be the same without Matt. He is the kindest of all of the kids when they were teenagers. He is very talented in soccer and tennis, and is also one of the most friendly boys in his grade. We've only lived in Henderson 10 months and Matt is very well known at the Junior High School. He helps so much in the yard and house. We are so grateful for him and the joy he brings to our family! For his birthday we went out to breakfast and then spent the day at Lagoon with the Zwick cousins. Happy 14th Birthday Matt! We love you!

Steph and Mike, Together Forever

Wow, what a wonderful day we had on Friday. Steph and Mike were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple. Sitting in the temple looking across at my four oldest kids made me so grateful for righteous children. Jeff's older brother, Craig was the sealer and did a beautiful job. It was very special to have our immediate and extended family in there all together. Craig made the sealing personal to Steffi and our eternal family. Steph and Mike are so happy! Thank you to everyone who made this day an unforgettable one! Thank you for the bridal showers, gifts, and most of all, the abundance of support and love shown to Steph, Mike, and our family.

Another Shower for the Bride!

On Saturday we celebrated with Steph at a family and friends shower at Aunt Connie's house. It was so great to see everyone! It was decorated beautifully with very yummy food! It brought tears to my eyes (many tears) as I looked around the room and realized how much love and support Stephanie has had and continues to have from these wonderful women and their daughters. Thanks to her sisters for a beautiful family recipe cookbook. Everyone there wanted a copy! No excuses for not cooking now, Steph! Thank you all for making it such a fun and special day for her! It's now wedding week! I'm so happy, excited and emotional!

Last night Ashley went to Prom! She got asked by a really good friend of hers named J.J. He's a Senior! He arrived at the door with a beautiful bouquet of flowers for me to thank me for letting him take Ashley! What a gentleman! They rode in a limo for the night, went to The Blue Man Group concert and ate at Macaroni Grill and went to the dance (which was in a hotel) downtown Las Vegas. She looked gorgeous and we're all enjoying detailed stories from the night.

Last weekend Ashley was in St. George with Em and Chad, and Matt and I were in Utah visiting the college kids. It was a short but productive trip. We got a lot of wedding things taken care of! Matt had a fun Spring break in Alpine, surprising his best friend at the doorstep asking, "Can Hayden play?" :) He had sleepovers and good hang outs with his old Alpine friends. He even went to college classes with Tia. Steph had her Bridal pictures scheduled Saturday, but with the non-stop rain we decided it wouldn't be the best day for the pictures. Her photographer was nice enough to reschedule the Bridals to Monday. Tia went up to Salt Lake with Steph (as her "assistant") and made sure the dress train fell right for the photos. Conference Weekend

General Conference weekend was an enjoyable and busy weekend for our family! Emily and Chad moved into their new house in St. George all day Saturday. We got to keep Parker for the day and night :) in Henderson while they unpacked, set up beds, unloaded boxes and even hung pictures! They are such good organizers and got a lot done without Parker getting into everything. WE MISS YOU GUYS SO MUCH! Spencer and Ellie also slept over at "Gramma's house" to give Andrea, Todd and Kate a little break. Tia drove in Friday to see the new baby and help with the babysitting. Ashley was in Florida on Choir Tour where they took 2nd place in their division against several other High schools! She called us with a very hoarse voice which may have been the result from too much singing? Hmm. They went to Disney World and she even had a couple missionary experiences. Good job Ash! While the boys were at the Priesthood session, Tia and I did a girl's night out (with Parker) and went shopping at the Town Square outdoor mall. Now that Park can walk, he thought it was very exciting to push the purses in his stroller! I wish I got more pictures from the weekend, but here are a few!

Andrea and Todd's new baby girl was born on Tuesday morning, March 24th. She weighed 7 lbs, 14 1/2 ounces, and is 19 1/2 inches long. Her name is Katelyn Jane Fredric. Everything went well. Andrea and the baby are home now and doing well. Spencer and Ellie love their new sister. She is a beautiful new addition to the family. We all love her so much, we can't get enough of her!

Rock Band: Now Starring...

Every time the grandkids come over they want to play Rock Band. We finally let them REALLY play with the controllar, guitar, drums, and microphone connected! It was quite a sight to see. They were engaged for a very long time. Tia's in town this weekend! She's been a big help with the little ones.

Emily's birthday was on Thursday! We picked Tia up at the airport, checked the kids out of school and the girls all went to Panera for lunch to celebrate. That night Chad surprised Em with tickets to see The Phantom of the Opera playing at the Venetian! She couldn't believe it! We opened presents, ate Cafe Rio, better than anything cake, and the two of them jetted to the musical. They said it was incredible, and almost better than Wicked! That's saying a lot considering hearing that from these Wicked fanatics (they've seen it over ten times)! We all want to go see The Phantom now. We love you so much Em! Happy Birthday!

Chad graduated from the University of Maryland and he, Em and Parker are staying with us for a few weeks while Chad interviews for jobs in the West. They sold their house in Owings Mills, and put all their things in storage out here. They should know where they'll be living soon.....Utah, Nevada or California. Chad has finished his bachelor's degree, doctor of pharmacy degree and Masters of business since he and Emily have been married. What a smart son-in-law!!! While Chad's been in school, Emily finished her RN degree and worked in the pediatric ICU at Johns Hopkins Hospital (while pregnant). She's been a great supporting wife and mother to our little Parker and we are so excited to have them with us! What a joy it is to wake up and see little Park every morning with a big smile on his face! We love you all and we're so proud of you, Chad!

STEPH'S ENGAGED!

Mike and Steph are engaged! They went to Phoenix for the weekend to be with his family. Last night after dinner he took her on a gondola ride and proposed! The ring is beautiful! They are so happy and we love Mike! They will be married in the Salt Lake temple on June 13th. Congratulations Steph and Mike! Let the wedding plans begin!

Girls Day Out

Tia and her friends came down to Henderson for the long weekend. Since Jeff and I were going out Valentine's night, we decided to make it a G.D.O. and left Jeff and Matty home during the day with the grandkids (who they tended for Todd and Andrea). Us girls did what we do best, SHOPPED, talked and laughed over lunch and saw the movie "He's Just Not That Into You". I had a fun filled day with my girls! Happy Valentine's Day!

Weekend visit to Utah!

Jeff and I decided it was time to make a quick trip to Provo to see our college kids, and spend some time with Steph and her boyfriend Mike last weekend. We were also able to squeeze in some family time with my brother Matt and his family on Sat. night. Sunday we visited Jeff's parents in Salt Lake, and then we went to Bountiful to see our nephew Adam who just got out of the hospital. It was so much fun to see our kids and go out to dinner with them. Matt and Ash did well holding down the fort, and even entertained some Alpine visitors while we were gone.

Sadie Hawkins Dance

Ashley's friend, Armand, came to Henderson with his Dad for a business trip and it happened to be the same weekend as Green Valley High's Sadie Hawkins Dance! She asked Armand (from Alpine) to be her date. These high school dances seem to never end but my kids sure love them! Here are some pictures.

The kids have had fun outdoors in this perfect weather. The skies are blue and the sun is warm. It's been the nicest weather here in Henderson the past couple weeks (high 60's to 70)! We wish it would stay this cool this summer. We'll enjoy it while it lasts!

Ashley is not only involved in the crazy high school life and drama here in Henderson but still stays involved at Lone Peak High School! After many begs from friends we bought her another plane ticket to Utah to pay a visit as well as go to Preference (a girl's choice formal dance) at Lone Peak. She stayed with her best friend Josie over the weekend (thanks Nelsons)! Ashley was ready on time and looked beautiful (thanks for the help Tia)!

My little grandson Parker turned ONE last Friday. We are so grateful for this little guy! He brings so much happiness and another fun personality into our growing family. Emily spent so much time planning and decorating a banner and cake for his party. He is one lucky boy. It's 2009!

Our favorite thing about the New Year is to open our previous year's goals and predictions which were sealed up and see how well we did. Then we set new ones for this year. There were a lot of unexpected events this past year but every change has turned out to be better than we ever imagined (especially the move). We love living in Henderson! New Year's Eve we watched a movie, and celebrated New Years 3 hours early, so the kids could still get to bed at a reasonable hour. The older kids left to downtown Las Vegas to friend's parties that night. We can't wait to see what 2009 brings! Happy New Year!

Christmas break was so special with everyone here together. Since Todd, Andrea and their kids live so close, they were able to be with us every day. Emily, Chad, Parker and the college kids all flew and drove in. We had many shopping trips, dinner outings, late night talks, laughs, saw good movies, watched football, played tennis, had a girl's night out and simply enjoyed being together. It gets a little louder and crazier with every additional family member added, but we love being together! I love having my kids home! Here are some pictures from Christmas Eve and Christmas day but there are still more to come!

During Christmas break Emily put this shirt on Parker underneath his jacket and told us that he might be feeling hot. As we took off his little jacket we saw this shirt Em made to let us know she's pregnant! She's already three months along and is due July 12th. We're all really excited for another new baby!

Spenny is FIVE!

On December 19th my grandson Spencer turned five! To celebrate we took the three grandkids to Peter Piper Pizza. The other kids weren't out of school yet but we had fun with who could be there. Spen was excited that his Aunt Emily and cousin Parker were in town for his birthday! The highlight was playing air hockey with grandpa. Neighborhood Christmas Festivities!

The Hillsboro hayride is an annual Christmas event in our new neighborhood which is held a few nights before Christmas. The kids and grandkids had fun on the hayride pulled by horses circling the neighborhood.

There were indoor activities at homes like cookie decorating, sandwiches, cider and seeing Santa! The little ones seemed to be very interested in Santa from a distance. Ellie kept saying, "I Santa!" The second she sat on his lap, this is what happened! Spenny was the only one not crying. He did have a very nervous expression on his face though. Despite the upset, they enjoyed the horses and the hayride! Maybe next year will go smoother!

LaS vEgAs BoWl!

We were unsure if we would be able to go to a BYU football game this season as a family. We couldn't believe it when we heard BYU will be playing in the Pioneer Las Vegas bowl at UNLV (so close by)! Saturday night we went to the game with the Parkers and cousins. It was cold but with good seats and true fans, we had a lot of fun cheering on cougar football one last time this year! This Thanksgiving break we had fun visitors, a lot of laughter, and of course so much food! A few highlights we didn't capture in pictures include: morning runs, hot tubbing, shopping on 'Black Friday', Twilight, family games, Spencer's first toast: "Dear Heavenly Father..." late night talks and laughs, and putting up the outdoor Christmas lights. It's always special when we can be together as a family. Here are some pictures of this week. We missed you Chad, Em, and Parker, but can't wait until Christmas where we can ALL be together!

"Fire, Brimstone and Football as Utah and B.Y.U. Collide"-NY Times

The BYU verse Utah game is always a big one...especially in our home. Jeff graduated from the 'U' and I graduated from the 'Y'. While most of our kids have gone to the 'Y', majority bleeds blue. However, last weekend with hardly any of my cougar fans around (except Steph who was able to start Thanksgiving break early) we broke even. My kids have gone down the BYU path but Jeff is still persuading Matt to wear that red. Now I've gotta start working on the grandkids before Jeff does ;)

We ate dinner at 'Fire It Up Pizza' as we watched the nerve racking game. Despite the loss, I'll still always cheer for BYU.

Ellie turned TWO!

It seems like just yesterday I was holding her as a brand new baby.

Little Ellie was sick on her birthday, but we celebrated the following day. My sister and her girls came out to visit for the weekend and we threw Ellie a small party. I sure do love my granddaughter! Happy birthday sweetheart!

OUR NEW HOME IN HENDERSON

Finally, we moved into a home in a great neighborhood called "Hillsboro Heights." We love the area. The neighborhood has a tennis court and playground area that everyone can use (without having to maintain it :) The house has a swimming pool, and we have a guest room (for the first time in our lives)! So, everyone come and visit us. We would love it! More pictures coming soon.

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT

WHAT A STUD! Greenspun Jr. High held their Back to School Night last week. Matt's in the madrigal choir, and they performed for the parents in the courtyard. They sounded great! Here's some pics of Matt and his friends. He gets to keep the tuxedo. Wouldn't it be great if he could wear the tux at a wedding before he outgrows it? ASHLEY & GABBIE

Last night Ashley, along with the rest of the Green Valley High School Girls' tennis team qualified to go to the State Tennis Tournament in Reno, NV on Oct. 23, 24, and 25th! It was so exciting to be there and watch these girls play their hearts out! It's been 7 long years since they have gone to the state tournament. It all came down to a tie between Silverado High School and Green Valley. Then it was one more round of tie breaker matches to see which school would represent the region. Unlike Utah, only one school gets to go per region, so it's a big deal! It turned cool here and the girls played under the lights at the beautiful Red Rock Country Club. They had to miss their own Homecoming Parade and football game back in Green Valley.....but, from the looks on their faces and the noise level after the match.....it was all worth it! Way to go Green Valley High School! What a fun year for Ash to be on the team!!!

Steph ran in the St. George Marathon on Saturday. She was so awesome! She even ran it in the pouring rain, and it only took her 4 1/2 hours! She is amazing....brains, beauty and physically fit, with a streak of sheer determination! Tia and Steph drove down from Provo and I met them in St. George. We stayed at the beautiful Inn at Entrada where High School Musical 2 was filmed (sorry, Ashley!) It was so much fun to be together. Then we all drove back to Vegas for the rest of Conference weekend. Steph was very sore for 2 days afterwards. I don't know if she'll ever do it again. But, SHE DID IT and we're so proud of her! Way to go, STEPH!

LITTE BUD: "Grandma, You're old!"

Last Thursday I picked up Spencer, my 4 year old grandson to hang out. We were just going on some errands, picking up Matt from school, etc. As he was getting into the car, I bent down to do up his seat belt. He looked me in the face and said, "Grandma, you're old!" He said it so directly, like someone just had to tell me! I responded sadly, "But, Spencer, I don't want to be old!" I thought maybe he'd feel bad for me and follow up his last comment with a compliment or something. (yeah, right) Instead he felt the need to emphasize his point even more by adding a fail-proof method, "But Grandma, you ARE old....Just look at yourself!!!"
I was laughing so hard. I realized that my 51 years does look "old" to a 4-year old. But, to Jeff's parents (in their 80's) we don't look old at all. "Old" is a matter of perspective.

Yes.....I have a blog!!! Tia set it up for me, so that's why it looks so cute. That's also the reason that I have a picture posted of Jeff and me in our swimsuits! So, stay tuned. Blogs and pics and more fun will be coming!
